If your horse is in good health and the appointment is for general health & well-being, I do not need a vet's permission prior to a treatment. If however you are looking at massage for injury rehabilitation or on vet's guidance, the Veterinary Consent Form (Below) must be filled in and returned to emma@okst.co.uk no later than 24 hours prior to the booking.

DownloadAll horses can benefit from massage, from competition to companion horses. When muscles are overused or misused, they can become sore and overstretched which can lead to injury, restriction of movement, decrease in performance and lameness. Much like as for humans, equine massage can be used for injury treatment and prevention and triggers the body into getting itself back to important optimal health. It is believed that massage can impact not only the muscular system but also the skeletal system, digestive system and nervous system
A brief "scientific" overview would be: the pressure applied in massage stretches out the tissues and the assists in the movement of fluid. Endorphins are released from the brain which diminishes the awareness of pain and the speed of the strokes can have either a stimulating effect or a soothing, relaxing effect.
On the day of the treatment, you will be given a paper of the visit notes including a breakdown of all the above findings, treatment given and any recommendations for the future.
Follow up sessions last approximately 60 minutes and will include a more condensed re-assessment and further treatment.
I am a keen Equestrian myself and have been brought up around horses. I have competed in British Eventing up to BE100 but now concentrate on Endurance Riding and competes in distances of up to 80km. I am aware of the hard work that is put in to get a horse ready for competition and understands the demand placed on the horse's body throughout the competitive season. As a human Sports Therapist, I am also able to think about how any rider injuries and imbalances may affect the horse as well.
I will help you understand the reasoning behind my treatment plans and I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
All appointments will take place at your location. Discounts available for more than one horse or yard bookings. To book an equine session contact me on 07870147557 or emma@okst.co.uk
